Hope

As I reflect on a new liturgical year, I have great hope for what it brings. The first Advent candle is lit, symbolizing hope, and its light shines forth these four weeks of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation, for the birth of Jesus as well as Christ’s second coming.

It is a time to turn back to the Lord, in a deeper and meaningful way, to examine my life and to move closer to Jesus. The season beckons me to find the light as the days grow shorter and the weather gets colder.

The three threads of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are woven together beautifully and leads one to grow in hope. They call one outside of self to see those around us. They are an exercise of the will and produce the good fruit of virtues; perseverance, humility and generosity. It is a place where hope is found.

My God, I pray that this Advent season is fruitful, that I come to You and You lead me deeper on the way. To have peace as I pray in the quiet of my heart and the noise of my mind. To free what has bound me and heal those areas. For the grace to fast and give with joy. To see others needs and respond with a gentle heart. Thank you, Lord, for the season of Advent, I feel the warmth of hope light the way to You. Amen.

Lord, help me to live this day, quietly, easily. To lean upon Thy strength, trustfully, restfully. To wait for the unfolding of Thy will, patiently, serenely. To meet others, peacefully, joyously. To face tomorrow, confidently, courageously. St. Francis of Assisi
