Finding Peace in Prayer

I woke up this morning with my dog Sam, right next to me. He had maneuvered his dog bed next to my bed, with his head literally touching the frame. Dogs are special creatures and I think they can sense feelings around them.

It was a comforting way to wake up, I felt protected. My husband is gone visiting his mother for the week and I don’t sleep well when he is gone.

I find myself waking up several times during the night and checking and rechecking all the doors to make sure everything is secure.

One of the nights I couldn’t get to sleep, I laid there tossing and turning, with my mind racing in a million different directions.

Finally, I realized something, I had lost my peace and the best way to get it back was to pray.

In our bedroom, we have a small statue of a sleeping St. Joseph and a tiny statue of Our Lady. I gifted my husband the St. Joseph statue and a friend gifted me the statue of the Blessed Mother. She got the statue in Ephesus, Turkey when she was on vacation.

I got out of bed, brought the statues to my bedside and proceeded to pray. After that, I had the most restful and peaceful night of sleep.

Sometimes, I can get so caught up in the fear, that I lose sight of the Lord. I take my eyes off of Him, and just like Peter, I sink into the dark sea. But, the Lord is always there, to reach out His hand, and bring me back into His peace.

Thank you Lord, for the gift of prayer, and for always being by my side. Amen.
