Sisters

I finally went to the movie theater last weekend to see Frozen 2. My daughter wanted to see it with me. I was not looking forward to it, as sequels seem more of the same. But I was pleasantly surprised that Disney did a great job continuing the story and based the movie on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen”.

It is a tale of sisters, one that I could relate to as I am blessed with one sister. We are just as opposite as Elsa and Anna, I am the introvert, the dreamer, the feeler and she is the extrovert, the leader, the strong one. She doesn’t hesitate to say what is on her mind and I keep my feelings to myself. It is a blessing as we complement each other and our family with our different gifts.

I am your sister and your friend. Never will I cease watching over you. St. Therese of Lisieux

There is a beauty of growing up with a sister, and I was only two and a half when she was born. I remember when my parents brought her home from the hospital. She was so little with blond hair, she looked like a doll. Much to the fright of my mother, who thought I would drop her, I picked her up right away to hold her close. It was a tender moment as God gave me a friend for life in a little sister.

As we grew older, we had the typical sister relationship with battles over going into each other’s rooms, not touching clothing before the other wore it a certain number of times, but for the most part, we were always there for each other.

The bittersweet part is as you grow older, your focus turns to boys and friends, you start to pull apart to seek your own identity. But there is something unique about the family relationship and especially a sister, who is always there for you no matter what. It is deeper than friendship, she is a part of my DNA, my very being.

Just like Elsa and Anna, are destined to live apart, we are separated by the miles, but hold each other in our hearts as sisters, as friends, and as family which is a great love gifted from God.

Let us love, since that is what our hearts are made for. St. Therese of Lisieux
