The Gift of God

I find the scripture passages that speak of the Samaritan woman at the well consoling and inspiring. The Lord waits for her, and when she arrives, He speaks with her. He asks her for a drink of water.

The exchange that happens between her and the Lord brings out her pain; her isolation, her past and present relationships, her loneliness. The Lord reveals Himself to her in love.

He knows her and does not condemn her. He is compassionate and listens to her. The Lord pierces her heart and soul with spirit and truth.

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4

Something in her heart stirs, and something in my heart stirs.

I desire this living water from the Lord. A spring welling up that does not go dry.

I ponder my life, and see how God was with me and continues to be present. I have a sense of the great protection of God.

Lord, I pray for living water which does not run dry. I pray for this beautiful gift of grace which is mighty like a great waterfall. Lord, I pray that I continue to give you a drink; of my love, of my praise, and of my devotion. Amen.

He has no need of our works but only of our love. For the same God, who declares He has no need to tell us if He is hungry, did not hesitate to beg for a little water from the Samaritan woman. He was thirsty….

But when He said, “Give me a drink,” it was the love of His poor creatures that the Creator of the universe was asking for. He was thirsty for love. St. Therese of Lisieux
